How to Play Bead Battle™: Simple Rules, Sneaky Strategy

Some games need a 20-minute explanation before anyone can start playing. Bead Battle™ isn’t one of them.

The basic idea can be explained in about a minute—but figuring out how to consistently win can take a whole lot longer.

The Setup

Bead Battle™ is a two-player strategy game played on a four-rung wooden board with 18 beads. At the beginning of the game, all of the beads are positioned on the same side of the board.

Then the battle begins.

On your turn, choose one of the four rungs. You can move as many beads as you want from that rung to the opposite side.

One bead? Fine.

Three beads? Go for it.

Every bead remaining on that rung? Also legal.

There is only one important restriction: during a turn, you can move beads from only one rung.

Then your opponent takes a turn.

Sounds easy, right?

Here comes the twist.

You Don’t Want the Last Bead

The object of Bead Battle™ is not to be the player who makes the final move.

If your opponent leaves you in a position where you have no choice but to move the last remaining bead, you lose.

That one rule changes everything.

Suddenly, the question isn’t simply, “How many beads can I move?”

It’s: “If I do this, what can my opponent do next?”

And then: “What will I do after that?”

That’s where Bead Battle becomes a strategy game.

Think Ahead

New players often concentrate on the move directly in front of them. After a few rounds, something starts to happen.

They begin looking ahead.

Maybe taking four beads isn’t such a great move.

Maybe taking only one is better.

Maybe the rung that looks unimportant right now is exactly the one that will determine who gets stuck with the final bead.

That’s the fun of it.

The rules don’t change as you get better. You do.

What If More Than Two People Want to Play?

Bead Battle™ is designed for two players at a time, but a group can easily join the competition. Let the winner stay on and face the next challenger, and keep track of victories if you want to crown a Bead Master™.
